Beautiful And Functional Lighting

You probably already know this on some level, but the lighting you choose for your home is critical for the beauty and functionality of the space. Too often, people add the lighting as an afterthought, without much consideration for the overall effect or the need for useful illumination.

The first consideration should always be for function. If your project is for an entire house, consider each space within that house – whatever areas are considered whole unto themselves. Usually this is by rooms. Think first of how you see the room being used. If this is a redesign it may be how it has been traditionally used, or you may take this opportunity to reshape it. Is it a room for work? For reading? For casual entertaining? For eating? For movie watching or music listening? A combination of these?

Next you should envision these activities more specifically. Where will they take place in the space? How much light will they require? A desk or table that will be worked at often will need dramatically different light than a painting to be highlighted on the wall. Also consider natural light – is the space bright enough during the day, or is there anywhere you would like it to be brighter?

There are 3 different kinds of lighting: background, task, and decorative. Each serves a specific and necessary purpose, and if layered properly, can show your room to its full advantage. Background illumination is the first layer – it should compensate for natural light in the daytime and light the room evenly at night. This is most often done by ceiling fixtures, but it can also be achieved by lamps and sconces around the room, providing overlapping pools of light. Task lighting throws intense, focused light on a workspace for preparing food, working, reading, playing an instrument, etc. With the bright light comes contrasting shadows, so be sure to place the light source in front of or beside the person, never behind. Decorative lighting, also known as accent lighting, is bright light shown on something to accent it – all form and no function. It can be to emphasize a painting as mentioned before, or an architectural element, a beautiful piece of furniture, a sculpture, a collection of some sort… the list is as varied as people’s tastes.

You are now armed with the essential knowledge and questions you need to ask yourself to embark on the task of lighting your space. Done properly, it can be a showcase that is as functional as it is lovely.

  3. QUESTION:
What do yall think of my novel?
Wake up Doctor!” exclaimed Mr.Doval. There was a loud crack as he threw open the door and ran into the dimly lit apartment. The blinds were closed and the lights were off. There was an odd silence to the room as Mr.Doval searched the efficiency. He stepped through a narrow hall into the study. The wood floor creaked as he walked onward. The desk lamp was shattered on the floor, glowing faintly making the man look almost ghostly. Dr.Henry Kompakia was sitting at an old wooden desk, a pencil in his hand, crafting strange pictures of things Mr.Doval had never seen before.
“Doctor?” Mr.Doval whispered as he walked up to the man. “GO!” the man exclaimed, Doval jumping in fright. The doctor threw down the writing utensil and threw the chair out into the darkness of the room. “Come back tomorrow!” He yelled as he rose from the desk. He must have been at least six feet tall, towering over Mr.Doval.” The machine…its ready, doctor,” Mr.Doval stuttered.
Suddenly the man’s expression changed, his eyes widened and he got a strange grin on his face. “Is it ready for flight?” the doctor asked Mr.Doval, his voice booming through the entire room. “Not quite, but it will be ready in time”, Dovel solomley stated,
“May I ask where you will be going?”
“To days to come!” the doctor shouted excitedly. That was the first time Doval had ever heard Dr.Kompakia sound so happy.
“So I guess you have waited awhile to meet her” Doval half asked the doctor. In fact, Henry Kompakia had waited longer than most people have ever waited for anything. “I have known her since I was a child”, the doctor whispered. His voice was faint, but you could feel the energy of his thoughts. ” I may know she doesnt exist yet, but that isnt enough to stop love”, the doctor told Doval. 43 year old Henry walked after Mr.Doval slowly down the corridors out of the dimly lit apartment. “So what time will you be transported to?”doval asked curiously. He wasnt told much about the experiment. The Doctor was always a quiet man, not willing to share his inner thoughts with anyone but his wife. When Mrs. Carly Kompakia passed from a lethal lung cancer, The Doctor had stayed in his apartment, only leaving once every few months to check up on the experiment.
“I will be going to the exact date of April 5, 2043 at exactly 10:09 in the morning. A resteraunt called Calligan’s Place” Henry told Doval as the short man shifted the old Corvett into gear. “But even when you get there”, doval asked, “How will you find her?”
“I already know my love, I will never forget that beautiful face”, Kompakia told the fat scientist driving the car.

    Additional Details
Sorry its a little hard to understand without reading more… heres some facts for you…

Henry Kompakia was sleeping one night, when he had a vision about a beautiful blonde child his age. She told him she loved him and he loved her in the same, but there was a simple problem. She was from 30 years in the future. But every night, he could speak to her, and she spoke back. The loved with a beautiful love never felt by anyone ever before. Henry decides that it cannot simply be his imagination. It is too powerful to be fake. He knew there was a connection to our time, and year 2043 and he has an idea to use the link to travel to his love. The two talked about it every night, but then it began to stop. The dreams became less often, until one year, they stopped completely. With the help of his friend Martin Doval, he has completed his design to reopen the link to the future, but sustaining the connection long enough that he could travel back and forth between time. Only, what does he find once he arrives?

  5. QUESTION:
Should I be worried about my Betta?
Well couple months ago I got a little blue male Betta as a present from a friend of mine. Since then I’ve learned a lot about Betta’s and how to care for them. So I quickly moved him from the little drinking glass sized (enclosure?) he came in, to a 1 gallon fish bowl. Its still not big enough I know, but I do plan on getting him a 3 or 5 gallon heated and filtered tank as soon as I can. Anyway I clean his bowl once a week, and for help with filteration I bought one of those aquatic Betta Vase plants which I made a bracket for out of some coat hanger. And yes I made sure the plant was had a much smaller diameter, than the opening of his bowl so he could breathe. Also for heat I’ve been using a standard desk lamp with 70 watt bulb which according to my stick on tank thermometer keeps his water between 75 and 80 degrees.
Ok now on to my question, last night I noticed there was a dead spider on the bottom of Beta’s bowl. I didn’t think anything of it because my old Goldfish, and Koi used to eat crap like that all the time, so I guess I didn’t think it’d hurt my Betta if happened to eat it. Well sure enough this morning the spider was gone, but my Betta was acting funny. Seems like all he wants to do is sleep, which is wierd for Beta. Normally all I have to do is shake his food can and he comes right to the front of the bowl like a dinner bell. He’s still swimming around ok, he looks as beautiful as ever, and I have gotten him to eat a couple little pellets over the course of the day. but he is deffinatly not himself.
Could eating that spider have poisoned my Betta? If so is there anything I can do to help him out? I know he’s just a fish and all, but I’ve really gotten attached to the little guy. Ok Well thanks in advance.
P.S. and yes my Betta’s name is Beta.

    • ANSWER:
Ok, if it was poisonous it may effect such a little fish . Even a house spider could kill it! Watch it and every time it poos siphone it out, i may be contaminated.

  6. QUESTION:
Have you ever gone garbage picking?
I’m NOT saying ripping people’s garbage open and digging in their crap, but if there’s a desk on the side of the road or book shelf or lamp or anything like that. I found a beautiful wood cared picture frame once. It’s huge. I re-finished it, and now it’s gorgeous.

    • ANSWER:
Yes I have. Where I live, once a year they have whats called Clean Up Day. You can put out anything and they will come along and take it.

  7. QUESTION:
    I dreamed of Necklaces?
I dreamed that I was looking at these beautiful silver necklaces. two were on top of the desk already. And It seemed to me I took out another one from my pocket and examined it, and admired it as I set it next to the other two which were smaller. I didn’t loose the necklaces, they were just laying there glistening in the light of the lamp on the desk, and they were without blemish.

It means you are in need of new jewelry. You feel like you need some “it’s all about me” time. Or it could just mean you’re a superficial person (I’m not saying your are).

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,
      Good luck 😉

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————
    5 DEATHS AND A STORY
    PROLOUGE
Before I begin let me just say that no one lives through this story. After the final chapter there is no ‘to be continued’, there isn’t a happy ending and there aren’t any twist and turns that will leave you hoping, believing that maybe a character you identified with would survive. No nothing works out, no morals, no preaching, no final realization. The screen fades to black and that’s it. Life doesn’t work out in the end, life won’t give you a second chance. You get one. And then, that’s it. There’s no final solution. Life will go on, whether you’re dead or alive. There are five people, five chapters and one link that connects them all, ill save that for the end.
    Any way let’s begin.
    CHAPTER 1
    Music played in the background.
It was one of those songs that you could almost sing along to if you could remember the words.
The smell of burnt, smoke from his last cigarette
If he had his eyes open he would see the elegant setting of a library completely furnished in dark maple desk, chairs and shelf’s almost stuffed with books, and a laptop powered on in a corner of the room on the floor.
Even with the single lamp on, from the desk and the white glow from the laptop you can see the chaos of the room that this reclining figure sat center of. Organised chaos he liked to call it. Almost every inch was covered in sheets full of doodles he was so fond of making and half finished books and miscellaneous items that he wouldn’t get rid of because it may or may not be applicable in some obscure never to be completed work of mediocre art that he had no interest in. It was a complicated life.
There wasn’t a clock in the room but the light from the window said it was midnight. The moon full and bright gave almost perfect detail to everything.
Let’s not focus any more on this person; i won’t even say his name. Names always create a sense of attachment and familiarity. This person won’t be alive long enough for such unfortunate pleasures as to have someone to morn for him.
The music erupted into static and his eyes fluttered open looking around for this sudden change in what he called ‘man time’
As his eyes passed the window the promised clear night turned foggy, so thick that it was almost entirely white.
A little girl stepped into the fog. Silence. The static that buzzed in the background was gone and the soft sad yet beautiful coo of the little girl sobbing made it to his ears, almost as clear as if she were weeping on his shoulder.
She was scarred and naked, barely a teenager, shoulder length dirty hair hung loose, twigs and leafs stuck here and there, her skin a lighter pale even than the fog.
She walked slowly to the very center of the street to be perfectly framed in the window, her profile to him. Looking at her feet, visibly lost and crying. Arms by her side hung loose, the obvious signs of abuse on her shoulders
He got out of the chair, walked to the window and stood there, stuck between wanting to rush to her aid and staying in the comfort and safety of his study. Her sobs still ringing in his ear.
All noise suddenly stopped, he was deaf. He smelt burning lavender, he thought he was having a stroke before realising that it was supposed to be burnt toast that signalled a stroke. The girl in the street jerked almost as if she was struck and her head slowly rose to stare straight ahead as if she finally realised where she was. Like something had clicked in her head. Like she was aware.
He finally caught a glimpse of her face and saw a tear stained eye and a scar on her cheek. That decided it. The sweet stained angelic face was to much to bear for his heart. He had to rush to her.
He looked around the floor for a towel or blanket he could use to cover the child while he thought of what to do with her. For her.
Suddenly deafening sirens blared in his ears, his heart that was filled with sorrow was now consumed with fear. Squeezing his eyes shut he slapped his hands over his ears to feel a warm sticky liquid run down his palm.
Knees buckling he fell to the floor and in his panic looked out the window. The angelic face that created the feelings of utter helplessness and almost physical knots in his stomach, was now pressed against the window. What he believed was angelic now seemed the spawn of desperate evil demons. One eye hollow and bleeding, beet red against blue ice skin, the other slit under the lower eye lid. H
hhahah gramatical errors aside hahah i just wanted to write
ignore whatever you think may have given me a failing grade in high school hahahah

Hi – I don’t know if you can answer this question, or point me to someone who can, but it’s an odd one. I’ve got a beautiful crowntail betta that I love and he sits proudly on my desk, keeping me company all day long and bringing a lot of peace to a stressful world. In an effort to de-stress Phin’s mommy (me) – I’ve purchased a Himalayan salt lamp…. negative ions, soft glow, yadda yadda yadda…. will it cause Phin any problems to be close to the lamp (no heat or anything, just wasn’t sure about the ion/salt thing).

Any ideas or help you can give me…..

  12. QUESTION:
    I don’t understand this joke!?! part 2?
    Metaphysical Downsizing:
One day a government worker was digging through his office drawers when suddenly he came upon a magic lamp. (Oh, c’mon, I’m sure there’s one buried in your desk too.) Since he’d heard these jokes before, he knew that he had to rub the lamp and make the genie come out. So he rubbed the lamp and — oh, surprise — out popped a genie.
The genie asked, as genies will, “What is your first wish?” The government worker thought about it for a second, and then replied, “I would like to be rich!” So the genie granted him his wish, and poof the man was surrounded by piles of money rivaling the heaps of even Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.
Since the government worker knew the whole wish process, the genie didn’t even have to ask for number two before he said, “My second wish is to be on an island with beautiful women surrounding me and obeying my every command!” And poof, he was there.
Then the government worker — or, as I like to call him, civil servant — decided on his third wish, “I don’t want to do any work ever again!” and poof — ubiquitous ironic twist — he was back in his office.

    • ANSWER:
Keep paying your taxes, you’ll get it soon enough.<3 the twist

  13. QUESTION:
    government joke is this funny?

puff…. a huge coke can appears

After drinking this he wishes he was on a warm tropical island with hundreds of beautiful sex crazy women.
puff… he is on the island and it is better than he could ever have imagined

Realizing he has one wish left he thinks for a while and then wishes he never had to work again
    puff……

    ………

    …..

    ……..

    ……..

he finds himself back in his government office!!!!

    • ANSWER:
That sounds about right. It would be even funnier if it wasn’t true! Have a star.

  14. QUESTION:

And It seemed to me I took out another one from my pocket and examined it, and admired it as I set it next to the other two which were smaller. I didn’t loose the necklaces, they were just laying there glistening in the light of the lamp on the desk, and they were without blemish. I also remember it was my office desk which is next to the window, and I could see my dad outside in the garden working near when it was about dusk just walking. And somewhere earlier in the dream I know my girlfriend was in there.

    • ANSWER:
Often dreams of necklaces are our minds way of reminding us of events in our lives, in this case I would say accomplishments. Three necklaces would be three good things. I’d link it to the things you mentioned in your dream, work, your father, and your girlfriend.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is the proper way to clean and light antique oil lamps?
And the proper care of these lamps?

    • ANSWER:
A piece of sponge fastened on the end of a stick or wire is the best thing with which to clean lamp chimneys. Old newspaper will make lamp chimneys sparkling clean. Simply turn the chimney while stuffing in the paper. You will be amazed at the results. Lamp chimneys are made less liable to break by putting in cold water, bringing slowly to boiling point, boiling for an hour, and allowing to cool before removing from the water. If a small hole is broken in a glass chimney, paste on a piece of paper and it will answer its purpose until you get a new chimney. If you use oil, buy the best kerosene. Test it “outside” by placing a very small quantity in a teacup, and if it does not easily ignite when brought in contact with a lighted taper or match, it is good; poor oil will ignite instantly. Keep lamp oil in a cool dark place; keep all the articles used for cleaning, filling, and trimming lamps by themselves. For these purposes provide an old waiter (to hold the things), a lamp filler, pair of scissors or a lamp trimmer, box of wicks, soap, washing soda, and several soft cloths and towels, also a wire hairpin with which to keep open the vent in the burner. When lamps need an extra cleaning, add one tablespoon soda to a quart of water, being careful that none of the bronze or gilding comes in contact with the soda. When the wick becomes too short to carry up the kerosene, and if you have not time to put in a new wick, a small piece of cotton rag pinned on below will prove a good feeder. When the burners of the lamp become gummy and prevent the wicks moving freely, boil them up in suds over the fire a short time, and they will become entirely clean and work well. Lamps may become incrusted inside with settlings from the oil, and ordinary washing will not remove it. Take soapsuds and fill the lamp about one-third full, then put in a little sharp sand, and shake vigorously. A few minutes will remove every particle of settlings.
Important: Always fill the lamps every day and in the daytime; never fill a lamp after dark near a lighted lamp; never light an almost empty lamp, as the empty space is nearly always filled with a very explosive gas. Never fill an oil lamp when lighted. If the lamp wick is dry after filling, allow it to become saturated with oil before lighting. Adjust the wick making sure it is level and trim with scissors if necessary. The wick may have to be adjusted to avoid smoking after lighting. In putting out a lamp, turn the flame down low, and wave a fan, book, or paper across the top of the chimney. Blowing down the chimney is very dangerous when a lamp is nearly empty and turned up high. To prevent lamp wicks from smoking, soak them in vinegar and then dry them thoroughly. Never start a fire in a stove or fireplace with the kerosene lamp oil.

Always be very careful around antique oil lamps, especially when children and young people are present; unlike the youth of Grandma’s day, they are not as aware of the dangers. Lamp oil is quite flammable and should always be used with caution. A dropped oil lamp could explode and destroy a house with fire. Here are a couple of lamp safety tips I learned from my old Dad:
      1. Never overfill the container with oil; fill to just over three-quarters full.
      2. And always make sure the lamp or lantern is sitting on a stable, level surface and never leave burning lamps unattended.

  2. QUESTION:
I am trying to locate a person who can help me value some Antique Oil Lamps I inherited?
I have a number of turn of the century, Victorian oil lamps. They are very beautiful and I have been told they could be worth a lot. I need a person I can send pictures to and speak with on the phone as well. Thank you everyone for your help. Randy

    • ANSWER:
You can check with and get an appraisal from either Christies or Sotherbys which are both auction houses. They are based in New York but they have branches in other parts of the country. Sometimes they can even give you an appraisal online or, with pictures, over the telephone. Both houses have web sites that you can use to get contact information.

  3. QUESTION:
Should I shine up the antique oil lamps I bought for my sister or would that ruin the “antique-ness”?
The glass is in very good condition but the metal between the oil reservoir and the bulb is tarnished.

    • ANSWER:
give it to your sis and let her decide, cleaning antiques could cause it to lose 50% or more of value or be worthless.

  4. QUESTION:
how do i find out the value of 2 antique oil lamps that are in original, excellent condition?
these lamps are app 40 in tall and very heavy. there are cherubs on the base and flowers on the globe. each lamp has crystals hanging from the globe. they have not been converted to electricity

    • ANSWER:
Since they have been converted they probably have lowered the value a bit, but they should still be worth something.

There are a few things you can do on your own to start trying to price it. First, see if there is a mark on the lamps of the person who made it. Usually on the bottom of it, sometimes around the neck of the item. If you have the maker you can sometimes find something similar.

You can go to an apraiser and have it done prophecinaly. You should usually get a couple differant estimates, and look for someone who specializes in that sort of thing.

You can search for similar ones online… here is a lamp that matches your discription: http://www.theoillampstore.com/antique_and_collectible_oil_lamps_3.html
You can see how much this sold for, see if it’s the same one, or look for others till you find it.

  5. QUESTION:

Parenting Tips: Do You Have a Problem Putting Your Baby to Sleep Every Night?

Along with many other aspects of effective parenting, you surely are coming across numerous opinions about putting a baby to sleep. If you are a first time parent, and maybe even if you have several kids already, you may have unresolved issues about baby’s sleep. Your friends, relatives, and colleagues may even take their own views on the number of hours babies need for sleep. Here are several insights and tips that you could follow. Take note that these have worked with so many babies. Thus, they are worth trying out. Remember that every baby is unique. You may have to know the behavior and likes of your baby to better take care of him or her.

Where should the baby be sleeping? There are several issues that normally touch parents. Is it appropriate to allow the baby to sleep with you on your bed? Should a crib be used instead? If you decide to use one, where should it be located, in your own bedroom or in another? Experts strongly advise against sharing the bed with your baby. This could be due to safety concerns. The baby could easily get trapped under the pillows and blankets, or worse, your spouse. You should also consider your sleeping habits. You could be a heavy sleeper especially when tired.

Always strive to put your baby on his/her back when putting him/her to sleep. Doing so could help the baby’s breathing. Taking from this tip, avoid anything that could potentially interfere or affect breathing. In this regard, put away plush toys, comforters, and heavy blankets. Prefer using a firm mattress. In case you use a soft one, be careful and watchful as the baby could get his/her head stuck into it, making him/her unable to breathe.

Use a crib and place it in your own room. Doing so could help you make sure that your baby is sleeping safely at all times. You should also be available to attend to his/her needs. You could also opt to use a separate room, but be sure you hear the baby cry. Always make sure the room to put the crib in is comfortably, well ventilated, and clean.

Establish a sound baby sleeping routine. Doing so could significantly add to the comfort. It could also set as a clear signal for the baby to go to sleep voluntarily and automatically. You could set a bedtime routine through doing the following. Bathe the baby early in the evening. This activity could help the baby take a longer sleep at night. It would help if you would start bedtime by telling the baby a story or singing a lullaby. Follow it by cuddles and hugs. You could opt to further feed him/her before putting to sleep.

Dim the lights, but avoid making the room completely dark. You would notice that the baby would learn associating dim lights with sleeping time. Do not vary the routine you set as much as possible. Follow these parenting guidelines so that you could be able to avoid a great stress when putting your baby to sleep.

Light Up Your Home With Elegant Wall Sconces And Wall Lamps

Most lamps require either floor or table space to be put into a room that needs light, and this can sometimes be a problem when there is not extra space. Instead of using a floor or table lamp, wall sconces and wall lamps can be used. Wall sconces and wall lamps are lighting fixtures that can be attached directly to a wall, and can provide the same amount of light as any basic lamp. Wall sconces and wall lamps work great in places that need extra light, such as hallways, bathrooms, or even living and bedrooms. They only require a small space on any wall, yet can provide enough light to light up an entire room. Originally wall sconces and wall lamps were meant for hallways and other areas where a floor lamp would not fit, but they are now being put in many different rooms to add a decorative touch along with a significant amount of light.

Wall sconces and wall lamps do require a little installation, since they must be mounted to a wall and minimal electrical work must also be done. Even though installing wall sconces and wall lamps may be a little bit harder than a typical floor or table lamp, they can save you space while adding a beautiful decoration to almost any room.

You can even choose to install a wall sconce that uses candles rather than a light bulb, since they require less installation and you can display your favorite candles almost anywhere in your home. They look great in entryways or hallways, and can still provide light in darker areas that may need it.

Not only are wall sconces and wall lamps great for lighting up darker rooms or areas in your home, but also work great to create certain atmospheres in some rooms. You can install a wall sconce in your laundry room to add a little energy to it, or even place one in your dark hallway to make it seem bright and welcoming. Wall sconces and wall lamps also work great in bedrooms, since they can provide enough light to read at night or watch a movie.

Because wall sconces and wall lamps come in a number of different styles and sizes, it is very simple to find one that can fit almost any room. More traditional sconces and lamps would look great in a formal dining or living room, while unique and colorful ones may look great in a bedroom or playroom for kids. Because wall sconces and wall lamps are placed on a wall rather than a table or the floor, you will never have to worry about a child knocking one down or breaking a lamp.

With wall sconces and wall lamps becoming more popular in the decorative world, they are very easy to find. Lamp specialty stores and even hardware stores contain a wide variety of wall sconces and wall lamps, or they can be purchased at a number of different online stores. They can be found with lights that shine up or down, and even some that can be put either way. Wall sconces and wall lamps are great when trying to add some extra light to almost any room, and also work great to add a beautiful decorative touch to your home.

  3. QUESTION:
The chimney sticks to far out in the living room, and we are painting, what color should we paint it?
I have very light couches, with tan trim. I have a beautiful red red wine accent wall opposite the large wall of windows. I also have a troublesome chimney. It juts out from the wall, and protrudes into the small apartment living space. I am double rolling the other walls in the living room with tan colors to set off the couches and accent wall. Should I leave the chimney, and fireplace white and noticeable, paint parts of it in trim with the red from the accent wall, or just let it blend into the rest of the room with the double rolled tan? The other idea I was thinking, was maybe to double roll it with 2 lighter colors of tan, so that it wouldn’t be as noticable? I have no idea what to do with it… Someone please help? – We are painting the whole place and we have hit our first snag. We have limited lighting in there as well, so we have to paint by day, and use uncovered lamps at night until we find some that we like. The beige carpet lightens it up some though. What to do..

    • ANSWER:
I would double roll the tan on the chimney so it is a shade darker than the tan wall. I am afraid white might be to bold and stand out like a soar thumb. Maybe even go with a light brown. my bathroom is brown with tan tile and trim with baby blue accent, looks great! Good Luck! You will figure it out, it may take a couple days of looking at it but you will eventually figure out what color!

  5. QUESTION:
Taj is a wonder of the world but Agra’s condition is very bad particularly its roads. Will anyone take care ?
Agra comes in golden triangle of India(Delhi – Agra – Jaipur) on tourist’s map of India but its roads r very bad. Yamuna behind it at north has no water except rainy season b coz before entering Agra, a big canal was opened towards Haryana & so entire waer went there. Bcoz of that TAJ is being badly affected. That canal must be closed. It is pity that even having Yamuna, Agra residents get borewell water which is highly saline(salty) & makes hair sticky after taking a bath. During Shahjahan’s period, Agra’s roads were beautifully made of red sandstones. Taj in original condition before destructions by Jats & Marhatta’s of Gwalior, had diamonds attached to each corner of every marble tile. Two very beautiful mable lamps of oval shape were hung on 2 graves having very complicated curved tubes insde such that oil inside moved in regulated speed & once lighted they were lighting perpetually . Viceroy replaced them with worse ones. now none is there. Will anyone replace similar ones ?

I feel a special connection with this lamp. I kissed my lamp once, and I was very turned on. I feel like I can never have a connection with a person as much as I do with the lamp. But even though I really want to get married, Im pretty sure theres no way to marry a lamp. What should I do???

  7. QUESTION:
{Hindus} – How could saint Surdas write such beautiful poem about Krishna?
Surdas was born blind, but he wrote so great poem about krishna as if he was watching him before his sight.

How can a born blind write so greatly about beauty of Krishna ?

for example one poem of surdas

Krishna awake, for the day has dawned:
    large, deep and lotus-like,
your eyes are as in the love-shaped lake
a pair of swans even a million Kamadevas cannot vie
    with the bewitching beauty of your face;
the sun rises in the east,
a crimson ball the night is going
    and the moonlight pales
    the lamps turn dim
    and the stars fade out
as though the bright radiance of wisdom’s rays
dispels the pleasures that the senses tire,
and the light of hope chases away
the murky darkness of despair and doubt.

    Listen, the birds sing
aloud with glee O sweet child,
    life of my life,
    my sole wealth,
    O darling boy,
    bards and minstrels
    sing your praises,
    saying ‘victory! victory!’

Clusters of lotuses burst into bloom
the bumblebees humming with sweet sound
    leave the lotuses;
as though the devout renouncing worldly ties,
    in your love drowned
chant your name as they go about.

Hearing his mother’s words with love
    drenched the Lord of Mercy arose from his bed;
    the world’s woes vanished,
    maya’s net was rent.

    Says Suradasa,
    ‘Seeing his lotus face delusion fled;
all doubts and dualities were destroyed and I found in Govinda eternal joy.

    • ANSWER:
Surdas is one of the people who had great influence on the cultural heritage of India. He was a poet, a saint and a musician and played all the parts with the same finesse. Since there are no authentic records on the life of Surdas, his biography comes up as a combination of facts and fiction.

How He could write is that though physically he was born blind, yet due to his Bhakti he reached such higher stages of spirituality that his Third eye started opening and working

It was from his mental eyes that he could see Krishna playing and doing his leela.

coming back from his samadhi, he wrote from his memory what he saw in his mental visions

Physical organs are no match for subtle organs, which start working when one enters samadhi

  8. QUESTION:
May I have your thoughts and criticisms on this please?
Firstly, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Sorry I have no turkey poems at the moment. 🙁 I’ll try to think of one,

    Sometimes I am Beautiful
(as we meet at a redlight district)

    Oh potential lover,
If my head weren’t cocked so
in this lighting as you speak to me,
    a tendril of fallen hair-
    parting shadow from light
    and pointing to my soul
deep within my retinas, like some distant sun
burning an internal lamp, through my hair a saintly halo,
    saints have struggled.
If I had to rely on a talent instead-
gliding my figure through cursive words,
or the strokes of a brush
the way my hips have circled you,
would you know where to to find me.

    sometimes I am beautiful,
    swathed
in the light of a street lamp,
or the muted hues of night,
your fingers gently brushing my chin,

or pointing out a silver lining
somewhere in the dampened air beneath the overcast
    of northern lights,
after the sun has slipped away, or just before it rises,
those long-lived spaces between the day
    when I am gold-plated.

Most of the time I am in transition
    from place to place,
    somewhere still in a dream,
as I cast my reflection in the window of a bus,
the trace of charcoal lining my eyes,
and a pearl necklace of strung bridge lights
against the natural finish of glass.
    I become a portrait,
passing through diners and office windows
until it is time for me to move,
and you discover I am counterfit,
lids hung like shriveled sheets of night,
my soul, perhaps searching for other homes,
    cold pressing against my skin.

Since when is “c0cked” a bad word?

    • ANSWER:
Wow. Would you understand me if I said brutal? Hits with a hard punch! I like it. Alot!

  9. QUESTION:
    Eyesores in Montreal?
I have to say I love Montreal and by no means this is a destructive criticism.

A while ago I asked why most street lamp light bulbs in downtown Montreal are so uncared and dirty. The answer selected by the readers as the best basically said “that doesn’t matter”. I have been to many North American cities and as far as I’ve seen, the magnitude of this eyesore in downtown is exclusive to Montreal, and this is not the only eyesore related to city care here (excessive graffity tags in beautiful buildings and cigarette butts on sidewalks are other examples).

The person who answered my previous question asked me why don’t I clean it myself (in a sarcastic way of course). I have to say I would definitely do it (or pay someone to do it) if it was not illegal. When I explain my concern to other Montrealers, I often get “shut up, go away” kind of answers. Is anyone else concerned about these things? Is the French-English debate more important than cleaningness?
Sorry, my first language is not English. I asked a friend how to write that word and made a mistake.

Even if I suffer from such disorder, does that invalidate my point? Constructive answers are still welcome.
    Lolita, relax.

    • ANSWER:
I work in Montreal and live off the island. What I can tell you about the city in general is that for many many years, the muncipal and provincial government has neglected the infrastructure and focused on things that are less important.

      Here are a few examples:

Every year Montreal has at least one water main that bursts and often ends up flooding the basements of various homes and businesses.

Our streets develop potholes so big you can put a frozen Butterball turkey into them and not see it from road level.

Last summer, part of an underground tunnel had to be closed because the roadwork that was done on the street above to add a bicycle path caused the tunnel ceiling to shift and develop a large crack.

In Laval, just off the island of Montreal to the north, an overpass collapsed on one of the major arteries into the city. It killed five people and the inquest showed that the city/province had been aware of the lack of maintenance on the roadway for years before it fell.

I find that in Montreal, most of the things that happen in the city are reactionary instead of being pro-active.

The politicians focus their efforts on areas that are most likely to win them another term in office or are popular, rather than facing a major problem in that the city is over 360 years old, and some of the infrastructure must be upgraded or replaced at a cost of several billion dollars over the next 10-15 years.

So in the grand scheme of things, dirty lampposts are not going to be high on their priority list, especially because the salty spray from cars going by in winter will have them dirty again in less than 24 hours.

However, I do agree that certain things should be cleaned up, and it could be done by making certain situations illegal. Examples:

Stores or buildings that have been vandalized with graffiti should be required to remove the paint within 30 days. By passing the costs on to their insurance companies, the insurance companies may try to force the city to do something about the problem, as they have more clout than the average citizen.

Lots that are boarded up or vacant should be required to maintain the area on a regular basis, to prevent people from using it as landfills for garbage, or letting ragweed and other weeds grow rampant on the property. This may force landowners to do something constructive with the property instead of just boarding it up and having someone plaster dozens of garage band posters all over the plywood barriers.

And I have to tell you, I have also been to a number of North American cities and I would say that Montreal is not much different than cities like Boston, New York, and Los Angeles in terms of having areas that look dirty or run down. The cleanest city I have been in was San Francisco in 2006, and even there they had homeless people sleeping on street corners, boarded up buildings, and one guy was even urinating into a dumpster at 5PM when I was on my back to my hotel.

Different parts of Montreal are handled differently for its cleanliness. I think if you had walked through Westmount, NDG, Mount Royal, or even the touristy sections of the Old Port, the lights would have been clean and working and garbage was at a minimum.

As for people telling you to shut up and go away, various people take criticism differently. If they felt you were putting down the city of Montreal, you would have received defensive answers from people you have insulted. Just take each message left for you with a “grain of salt”.

  10. QUESTION:
What do you think of the inscription on the Statue of Liberty?
I often think the Statue of Liberty needs an update in light of the US’s recent views on immigration. It makes me sad to think that Americans used to define their country by such a beautiful sentiment, but have reversed their views so utterly. What do you think?:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

    • ANSWER:
You make a really good point. I think that national security has begun to effect our immigration laws so much that this statement is far from the truth. It’s a shame that our country is no longer seen as such a refuge, instead something else entirely.

The only thing is, I’m not too sure on the suicide aspect… could you tweak it? Turn the suicide stance in something else? Make the blood more figurative as opposed to literal?

You’re good with writing about anger… maybe that?

OR leave it be and ignore me. Either way I really enjoyed it.
      Love the idea too.

  13. QUESTION:
<3 Poem I wrote today: Please comment and thank you very much?
    [Title] Ten Past The Hour

Dusk in the fields of the green grass at eight-ten
Lavender clouds chase the moon in the sky
Blue skies and two eyes my heart follows just then
Capture my thoughts and they must ask them why

Dusk in the fields of the green grass at eight-ten
Ah, should I swoon when my hand draws you near
Angels will catch me and heal my abrasions
That sting with a passion that cradles me here

T’is very sweet, t’is very sweet
This fragrant rose bud that breathes the day
And this beautiful flower blossoms deep in my spirit
With kindness and peace, I see tonight

Dusk in a world that is sleeping in sadness
Rise of a night that has captured the moon
Stars twinkle softly in eyes that show gladness
Knowing the darkness won’t be here by noon

We speak to silence and dance without sorrow
We seem to leave worries behind
Hearts full of grace, arms embrace in the shadow
Ah, do I dream of the gentlest kind

T’is very sweet, t’is very sweet
This flaming lamp light that burns like day
And this radiant candle kindles deep in my spirit
With warmth and in peace, I feel tonight

    Ten-ten, let me wander
    See you shining near me
The chill seems to slip far away from here

T’is ever sweet, t’is ever sweet
T’is ever sweet, oh grace, divine
And this radiant candle, burns with love in my spirit
In your eyes, I can see it burning too

In your eyes, I see that you love me too

  14. QUESTION:
Questions about an old antique lamp-Socket is Leviton brand, maker’s mark is FC?
My grandmother passed away a few years ago and a beautiful set of lamps has been sitting in my mom’s basement ever since. My mother gave them to me and I’m trying to figure out what they are. They are green, olive glass, large with brass roses and a brass base. Also, there is either marble or faux marble at one point towards the base of the lamps. The maker’s mark is: an ‘F’ and above the F is a ‘C’ in a cirle. The two letters are actually upside down, until you turn the lamp upside down, then it is the F on top and C on the bottom. The light bulb socket is Leviton. Does anyone know possibly what company made these lamps or how I could find out?

    • ANSWER:
A picture may help identify it. Possibly a Fenton.

  15. QUESTION:
What should I name my artwork?
Sry for the rush, but I need this immediately. This is the story: last year I put my work in a critic and because of the great name, I won the gold key (top award). The piece was a found object sculpture, the bottom was a lamp and on th etop, I removed the bulb and the cover thing and put in an elegant branch and called the piece enlightment. (purposefully mispelling it). Now I made a similar one, this one is just the light bulb wire and the head (no stand) and the branch is alot more thornier. These are some adjectives I can use to describe the piece: gloomy, murky, stark, etc. Basically, i need a really smart and beautiful name for this piece and am turning it in at 3 PM today, so pleace hurry. Also give several suggestions you think are good. TKZ alot in advance.

    • ANSWER:
      Branches of enlightenment

  16. QUESTION:
Hi what do you think of my descriptive writing could you please point out errors and good things thankyou?
It was a bitterly cold winters night. Sparkling frost clung to streetlamps, decorating them with a shimmering finish. Stormy winds violently rocked the glistening trees, making them sway wildly like a drunken man. The flailing grass broke free of its frozen constraints as the storm raged on and the first droplet of icy rain fell. The heavens opened. A torrent of unstoppable rain ransacked the whimpering city. Traffic ground to a halt as the never ending rain fell violently making it impossible to see. The city paused. Frozen in a moment of time. Each droplet of rain, not one the same graciously hung in mid air. Each droplet caught the desperate light of the moon that was fighting to break free of the storm clouds and burst into glorious light like a thousand stars all bursting into one joyous existence.
The buildings shrank away from the rain, as roofs flooded, windows caved and cars crashed. The magic disappeared and chaos returned. The web of wires that usually encased the cities sky line like a spiders web was faltering under the elements ferocious gaze. Rubber particles strained against one another fighting a methodical madness. The rain did not cease. Rubber burst and copper split, wires sent schizophrenic sparks spraying onto the city below. A small bus which had a shining red paint coat (although it seemed dull in the ferocity of the storm) caught the deadly sparks square on. The paint seemed to scream as it was burnt off which perhaps foreshadowed the disaster that was about to occur. The bus driver a middle aged man wore a large leather jacket and dark blue jeans, he had a ruffled moustache and wore glasses that were slightly to big. His face was a mask of concentration as he tried to manoeuvre the bus through the horrific amount of rain. Concentration morphed to surprise, as sparks illuminated the bonnet. The bus swerved into a nearby post office destroying a lamp post as it went. The fuel tank ruptured and an explosion worthy of the gods lit the sky.
Chaos raged on. The river that ran through the city centre was usually a small delight for anyone who cared to sit on a bench and snack on a sandwich. It was fascinating to listen to the rivers delightful sounds and to some it was like listening to the song of an angel. But delight turned to destruction as levees that protected the strained river banks struggled to hold under an assault from the rain. The river burst unleashing its fury upon the cowering city. The elements ruled, Lightning flashed which served only as a way to illuminate the horrified looks upon the scared citizens. The tidal flood surged destructively through the city managing to topple gargantuan statues and small plants alike.
A raven perched upon the tallest building which stood 40 stories high looked undoubtedly impressive, as it caught the glinting gleam of the lightning. Its beady eye surveyed the city below as if judging something. The raven took flight and was soon swallowed by the storm clouds. Street lights faltered… lamps flickered and darkness swallowed the city. Darkness suited the city better than light. It swallowed the screams and the horror, leaving way for only uncertainty. The only light now was the moon which glowed eerily over the flooded city like a mourner at a mausoleum. The rain never ceased, never ended and never faltered, It could alter reality, smash dreams and conquer cities. It was death.
It was a bitterly cold winters morning. A crystal blue sky was illuminated by an icy cold sun. Frost had settled on top of buildings and streetlamps. Icicles hung like daggers poised to strike from the tips of taller buildings. There was a dreadful silence that plagued the cities streets, an all consuming silence. It was birds that broke the dreadful silence, their song was beautiful and mourning. The city died.

An idea for an ending would be that:

the story would build up, strange things happening, doors seeming locked but the next minute are open, strange creaking noises, maybe a few creepy characters ( maybe a old man who’s the ground keeper maybe) then develop the start, maybe your main character could find a diary of a girl who stayed there and saw the ghost and then she would go on a mission to find out about the ghostly man.

the end could be her finding out his story or maybe finding out why he haunts the place.

      there s a few ideas

      hope this helps

  19. QUESTION:
    Rate my writing, please?
I have a bit of writing that I would love to be read and (nicely) criticized by the community of Yahoo! It’s just a passage, not story, nor poem. Also, it still has some additions to add onto the end. Oh, and please do not steal my thoughts, make your own. Thank you. (:

I want to run away, badly. The thought consumes any others that dare venture into my thinking. A life on the run is my dream. It’s a beautiful scene set, no, engraved in my mind and it’s wrestling its way out every crevice of my brain and into my actions. My night has been replaced with a routine so enticing; I cannot exempt myself from it. Every night, I walk out of my front door and parade down the streets, finally feeling free. But as soon as my steps cross the threshold back into my domain, I feel constricted.

Every fiber of my being is charged magnetically, pulling me towards open streets, dark fields, and dastardly looking streetlights. The only things that keep me going are these simple strolls in the midnight moonlight. I am fake by day, true by the light of lamps and shady neon signs. Freedom is my true self, not achieved by living under the laws and morals of others. Freedom is on the run, presenting itself to me as such a tease; I cannot help but take the bait. I have dreams, plans, ideas, thoughts, intentions; all of which pertain to my liberation.

Simple little threads keep me bound to this house. Bound to a hell created by me, created by my utmost longing for a life. A life that is fabricated for my need of freedom.
    EDIT:
cath – It’s supposed to be hopeful kinda.
Haha, I guess that last addition really matters.
    EDIT:
Athena – It’s informal, haha. And, the shady neon signs is reference to shady meaning not so reliable. I somehow could not find a way to be clear on that. But, thanks for everything.
    EDIT:
No Sh*t Sherlock – Haha, you understood my POV perfectly. And Inception was amazing.

    • ANSWER:
Holy crap, Athena, get a life. She’s talking about freedom, and here you are instructing rules. Starting a sentence with “But” is a sad way to contract revenge. Microsoft Word is correct, but has no spirit.

It’s actualyl REALLY funny a few people were all “too pretentious!” because ususally I go on about that too, but I really didn’t find this to be so. I liked it. I liked it alot. It reminded me of me. Kind of like the movie Inception, where I think it’s awesomely sick, and everyone else is like “too much thought!!! Boo!”.
Right… verdict? me like. I didn’t find it to drag on at all…. maybe I have a bad habit of doing the same thing so I can’t recognise it, but I liked it. 😀
I’m too afraid to go on the run. Sigh. And I owe too many people my existence.

and p.s. It just occurred to me I don’t know if your “she” or “he” so sorry if i mistook your gender in my defenses against Athena!

Three Classic Types of Touch Table Lamps

I am astounded that more people don’t think of table lamps when they find themselves in a quandary, not knowing what to purchase for friends and relatives as a gift. How often have you considered a table lamp gift? When you are in a situation where you need something to liven up your home or office but are not sure what to add to the mix, why don’t you think to try a new table lamp or desk lamp?

You are hardly alone. But table lamps and desk lamps can make the gifting task so much easier. They are often among the most well received gifts you could offer since they often are things we delay and put off purchasing for ourselves. Most young couples, strapped for cash, walk around their dimly light apartments or new homes until they have saved enough to splurge on home furnishings. Who wants to walk around some dimly lit space, or strain their eyes reading in the dark! For these very reasons, table lamps make terrific gifts for weddings and housewarmings.

For those weighing various types of table lamps as part of their gift giving and purchasing options, here is an idea: look into touch table lamps. They also have the added functional benefit of properly illuminating a room so consider that another positive. Of course, not all touch table lamps are built identically. If you are curious as to which touch table lamps to purchase for the home or office, three of the most popular categories of touch table lamps are:

1. The Brass Touch Table Lamps
2. The Military Touch Table Lamps
3. The Celebrity Touch Table Lamps

We will take a quick look at these Touch Table Lamps in our next several paragraphs.

Brass Table Touch Lamps

The presence of a brass touch table lamp in any environment will improve an interior tremendously. Brass has a definitive eye-catching quality. However, since brass is decidedly less rare and considerably less valuable than gold, it has developed some common misconceptions regarding its quality. Nevertheless, no one is seriously considering purchasing a solid gold table lamp! Rest assured, the quality of brass makes it perfect for those looking for a centerpiece style table lamp. The touch table lamp can provide both visual allure and functional quality.

Touch table lamps are not made completely of brass and include popular looking shades that can come in many designs. These designs can include variations on the shape of the shades as well as illustrations on the shades. The illustrations can include depictions of hunting dogs, various birds, wolves, flowers such as roses, and many other subjects. The variety of designs helps increase the number of locations in your home in which a touch table lamp can be placed.

Military Touch Table Lamps

In the current era, Military touch table lamps have become popular. The world is experiencing a resurgence of patriotism and support for the military in a way that has not been seen in years. This has led many to show their support for the military in scores of different ways. These touch table lamps feature shades with illustrations and depictions from all of the branches of the military including the army, navy, air force, marines, and, national guard. Additionally, these table lamps also include designs honoring service members MIA, POWs, and fallen soldiers.

For those who wish to honor the military or show their patriotic colors, a Military touch table lamp can make an excellent purchase. In terms of their function, they possess the added benefit of also truly being excellent top of the line table lamp.

Celebrity Table Touch Lamps

Celebrities are commonly treated like royalty! So, it should come as no surprise that there are a number of touch table lamps that feature glowing tributes to celebrities. This “glowing” is both a mix of the figurative and the literal. In other words, the illustrations of the celebrities assuredly present them in a positive light while the actual light emanating from the lamp provides the proper illumination one would expect from a quality lamp.

The celebrities featured on these table lamps cover a wide range of characters. Those featured on the lamps include John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Betty Boop, and even characters from Star Wars. You could consider many of these celebrity touch table lamps to be a reliable homage to some of the great and classic characters of pop culture. Those who enjoy collecting such items would definitely be best served looking into purchasing from this collection of lamps. And, as always, the functional quality of the lamps is top notch so you need not worry about whether or not the lamp will deliver in the lighting department.

Why purchase a dull looking lamp when there are much better options available? The three types of touch table lamps listed previously provide quality, functional, and aesthetic value to any environment. That is why touch table lamps should never be dismissed as they will deliver on the expectations of the consumer.
